A delivery receipt is not the inbox you paid for

Answer A delivery receipt is a machine report, not proof the solo ad reached a person. RFC 3464, from January 2003, describes that report. An action of delivered means a system accepted the handoff. It does not mean the inbox, it does not mean a read, and it does not mean nobody complained.

The stack is the report. The envelope is the mail. They are not the same document.

The note that started this: RFC 3464: An Extensible Message Format for Delivery Status Notifications, IETF, January 2003.

The argument after a weak send almost always starts with a screenshot. The seller's software says delivered, in green, next to a percentage that looks like a grade. The buyer's link says almost nobody arrived. Both can be telling the truth about different events. The receipt is about the handoff between machines. The link is about a person who clicked. If you only stare at the green word, you will pay for handoffs and call them readers.

RFC 3464 is the note that started this. It specifies how a delivery status notification is formatted, as a machine report rather than a friendly letter. The useful fields are plain once you know their names. The action says what the reporting system did: failed, delayed, delivered, relayed, or expanded. The status carries the enhanced code from the companion standard, so a failure can say whether it is temporary or permanent. The recipient field says which address the report is about. None of these fields is a survey of how the person felt.

What is a delivery status notification?

RFC 3464 defines a machine-readable report about a message, including who it was for, what action was taken, and a status code.

It is mail about mail. The reporting system is telling the sender what it did with one message for one recipient. A stack of those reports can be summarized into the percentage your seller is showing you. The summary is only as honest as the action codes underneath it. If the tool collapses delayed, relayed, and delivered into one green bar, the bar is a painting.

Ask for the export, or for the three counts that matter: delivered, delayed, failed. If the platform cannot separate them, say so in the quote before you pay, and do not let a single word do the work of three.

Does a delivered status mean the solo ad reached the inbox?

No. A delivered action means the reporting system took responsibility for handing the message on. It does not mean a person opened it, and it does not mean it avoided the spam folder.

This is the distinction affiliate mail keeps tripping over. A receiving server can accept a message and then file it where the person never looks. The DSN already happened. The reader did not. An open pixel has its own lies, which this desk has already covered, and a click on a link you control is still the cleaner evidence that a person arrived. Even the click is not a sale. It is a visit. Do not promote a delivery receipt all the way up to revenue.

Sellers get trapped by their own dashboard. The bar is green, so the order feels complete. Then the buyer writes, angry, with a tracker that does not match the bar. The repair is to explain the handoff in the quote, in one sentence, before the send: delivered means accepted by a server, and the buyer's link is the number you will both look at. Solo ads for affiliate marketing only work when both sides know which number is which.

What should you compare against a seller's delivery screenshot?

Compare it to the click count on a link you control, the time in the quote, and the status codes for anything that failed.

Three comparisons, same day. If the mail went when the quote said, the receipt and the clock agree. If the link is wildly out of step with the delivered count, you have a placement problem, a tracking problem, or a file problem, and you can ask which one with the codes in front of you. If the seller will not show anything but the green word, you are done learning.

Keep the screenshot if you want. File it next to the link report, not instead of it. Buy solo ads for the visit you can count. The 2003 report will tell you the machines talked. It will not tell you the person cared.
