An out-of-office is not a click on a solo ad

Answer An out-of-office reply to a solo ad is automatic mail, not a click and not a lead. RFC 3834 describes those automatic responses and the Auto-Submitted header that marks them. A seller who counts vacation notes as engagement is counting the mailbox, not the person.

A machine answer is still just a machine answer.

The note that started this: RFC 3834, Recommendations for Automatic Responses to Electronic Mail, RFC 3834.

After a drop, the exciting screenshot is a reply. Some replies are people. A lot of them are software doing what it was configured to do while the person is away, or while a filter asks the sender to prove they are human. The invoice should not treat those as demand for the offer.

RFC 3834 is the recommendation for automatic responses to electronic mail. It is from 2004, and the problem it describes is older than solo ads as a product name. Automatic responders answer incoming mail. If they answer each other, you get a loop. The document's practical advice is to mark automatic mail, limit how often a responder writes back, and avoid answering mail that is itself automatic. The header it points to is Auto-Submitted. When that field says auto-replied, a person did not sit down and write the note.

What is an automatic reply under RFC 3834?

It is a response generated by software, such as a vacation note or a challenge, rather than a message a person wrote. RFC 3834 recommends marking that mail with Auto-Submitted so other systems can tell.

You will see the ordinary kinds. Out of office until a date. A ticket system that opened a case because the solo ad landed in a support inbox. A challenge that asks the sender to click before the mail is shown to a person. None of those is the reader choosing your offer. The challenge is especially easy to misread, because it contains a link. The link keeps the sender's mail alive. It does not endorse the product in the body.

On solo ads for affiliate marketing, the buyer is hungry for any sign the list was awake. A folder of auto replies feels like proof. It is proof the addresses exist and that some of them run responders. Existence is not intent. Intent is a person who opted in to you, or a person who clicked through and did the thing the page asked. Keep those counts in different columns.

Should a solo ad seller count an out-of-office as engagement?

No. An out-of-office is the mailbox talking, not the person clicking, buying, or asking for the next letter. Counting it as interest inflates the story of the send.

Engagement, in the only sense that helps the next send, is a person doing something they meant. An open can already be a privacy proxy. An auto reply is a further step away from the person. If the seller's report adds those replies to a response rate, the rate is a costume. Ask for the raw distinction. How many messages came back with Auto-Submitted, and how many did not?

If you sell the send, filter the auto replies out of the story you tell the buyer. You can mention them as a delivery smell, a sign some corporate mailboxes received the mail and answered with policy. You should not sell them as conversations. The buyer who builds a follow-up sequence to a vacation address is mailing a robot, and the robot's domain may not enjoy the sequel.

What should a buyer do with auto replies after a solo ad?

Ask the seller to separate machine replies from human replies in the proof, and do not pay a bonus or a renewal on the machine pile. A vacation note is not a lead.

Read three of the human replies yourself before you believe the tone of the list. A real complaint is more useful than twenty vacation notes. A real question about the offer is a person. A real unsubscribe demand is a person you must honor, and it is also a sign the letter did not belong in that inbox.

Do not pipe auto replies into your own list. They did not ask you for mail. The address that answered may be a role account, a leak, or a trap that replies to everything. Safe solo ads sellers will show you the difference without being asked twice. Pay for the people. Leave the robots in the other column.
