Relay tracking is not an open

Answer Relay tracking is not an open. RFC 3885 describes an SMTP service extension for message tracking. A client that submitted or relayed a message can ask a server, later, what happened to that message as it moved. The answer, when it exists, is a mail system talking about transfer. It is not a pixel loaded by a reader, and it is not a click on an offer.

The note that started this: RFC 3885, SMTP Service Extension for Message Tracking, RFC 3885.

The word tracking does too much work in solo ad sales. It can mean a link wrapper, a pixel, a postback, or a log line inside the sender's platform. It can also mean this protocol, which most buyers will never see and which this note will not claim your seller uses. If you are sorting best solo ad vendors, make them name the object. A report without a noun is a fog machine.

The extension is optional. A server advertises support or it does not. A client asks or it does not. Silence is the normal condition on the public internet, not a scandal and not a secret advantage. Do not let a seller tell you that ordinary delivery logs are this RFC. Ordinary logs are whatever that platform stored. They might be useful. They are a different artifact.

What is SMTP message tracking?

RFC 3885 describes an SMTP extension so a client can ask servers about the status of a message as it moves between relays. The status is about transfer. It is not an open, and it is not a click.

Transfer is the handoff from one mail system to the next. Delivered to the next hop is a fact about systems. Delivered to a folder a person looks at is a fact you usually cannot see from the outside. Opened is a fact about a fetch of some resource, and even that fetch is often a proxy, a preview, or a security tool. Clicked is a fact about a request to a URL. Three or four facts, three or four columns. The extension in this document lives in the first column, and only for servers that implement it.

This note stays at that altitude on purpose. The commands and the tokens are in the specification. Quoting them from memory in a sales blog is how fake precision starts. If a seller claims the extension, ask them to point at a received tracking reply for your test message. If they cannot, they are using the word in the casual sense. Casual sense is allowed. It has to be labeled as casual.

Does a relay status mean a person saw the solo ad?

No. A relay status, when a server supports the extension and answers, describes what a mail system did with a message. A person seeing the creative is a later event, and many systems never send this kind of status at all.

Saw is a human verb. Machines accept, relay, defer, and refuse. A person can leave accepted mail unread for a week. A person can read a message on a device that never loads your images. A person can be a filter that accepted the message and filed it where nobody looks. Relay status, even in the best case, stops before those scenes. Paying as if it continued into the reader's eyes is paying for a scene the protocol does not film.

Use a link on a page you control when you need a human action. The request hits your server or your tracker. You still have to throw out junk requests. You at least have an object that can be a person. A relay reply cannot be a person. It was never trying to be.

Should a buyer pay extra because a seller offers tracking?

Only after you know which tracking. A web link you control can count a request. A relay protocol between machines counts something else. Ask which object is on the report before you pay for the word.

Extra is a tell. The base solo ad is one send to a list, with a creative, a domain, and a result you can argue about. Tracking, in the honest version, is how you see the result. It should be included as the way the job is measured, not as a luxury add-on named after a protocol the seller has not implemented. If the add-on is a dashboard of opens, say opens, and remember what an open is not. If the add-on is this extension, you are looking at a rare operational feature, and you should see it work on a test before you fund it.

RFC 3885 is a way for relays to answer a question about a message in flight. Let the answer stay a relay answer. Your reader is the person who reaches the offer. Count that person with a tool that can see them.
