A read receipt is not a click
Answer A read receipt is not a click. RFC 8098 defines the message disposition notification, a report of what happened to a message after it was delivered. Display, deletion, or a refusal to notify are dispositions. None of them is a hit on your offer. A missing receipt is not proof that nobody looked.
The note that started this: RFC 8098, Message Disposition Notification, RFC 8098.
The request is old, and consumer mail mostly ignores it. Enterprise mail sometimes honors it. A solo seller who turns the request on, then waves three automatic replies as proof of reads, has built a number out of a feature most inboxes decline. If you are comparing solo ad pricing, ask which number on the invoice is a click and which number is a receipt. They do not belong in the same cell.
The specification is from February 2017. It replaces an older document and it is still the one that describes this notice. The notice comes after successful delivery. That sequence matters. Delivery already happened. The receipt, if it comes, talks about a later event: the contents were displayed, the message was deleted without display, the recipient refused to send notices. It does not talk about whether a link was followed. A delivery status from the server, which is a different system, is not this notice either. Three different machines, three different stories.
What is a message disposition notification?
RFC 8098 defines it as a report of what happened after a message was delivered, such as display, deletion, or a refusal to send a receipt. People call these read receipts. They are not clicks.
The format is meant to be read by software as well as by a person. It names the recipient and the original message and a disposition. That precision is useful inside a company that has agreed to send the notices. It is a trap on a rented consumer list, where almost nobody agreed, and where a security tool can generate a notice the human never saw. Displayed can mean a preview pane. It can mean a program. It does not mean convinced.
Asking for the notice is a header on the message you send. The reader, or the reader's program, decides whether to answer. You do not get to demand the answer by paying for the solo. A seller who promises read receipts on a consumer file is promising other people's software.
- Receipts are labeled as receipts.
- Clicks are hits on the tracked link only.
- A request for a receipt is disclosed, not hidden as a trick.
- Silence is not entered as a zero read.
Does a missing read receipt mean the solo ad was not read?
No. Many mailbox programs do not send these notices, and a person can refuse them. Silence is not a measurement of attention.
This is the mistake that flatters a worried buyer. No receipts came back, so the mail was ignored, so the list is dead, so you should buy another drop. The absence of a voluntary notice is the normal case. Gmail users are not sitting on a button labeled send the advertiser a receipt. Treating the normal case as a failure will talk you into mailing harder, which is how complaints start.
The opposite mistake flatters the seller. One receipt arrived, so the list is alive, so the open rate in the other column must be real. One cooperating mailbox is an anecdote. You already know opens can be inflated by image loads that are not people. Do not add a second soft number from a feature the RFC itself treats as optional.
Should a seller add read receipts to the engagement count?
No. Keep receipts, if any arrive, out of the click line. A click is a hit on the tracked link. A disposition notice is a machine or a person answering a different question.
Show the buyer the click count without a receipt sitting beside it pretending to be the same species. If a receipt arrives, read it as a disposition of one message. Then go back to the link. The link is the thing you paid to have hit. The receipt is a courtesy some systems still know how to send.
RFC 8098 is a real standard for a narrow report. Use it when you asked for that report and you understand what came back. Do not use it to decorate a solo ad invoice. A read receipt is not a click, and the lack of one is not a verdict.
